Startup scholarship

Update: Please don’t apply anymore! We won’t accept any further applications!

Are you a student with an entrepreneurial spark?
Can’t wait to start your own thing?

Wait no more. We want to support your business idea through our Startup Scholarship of $1,500 plus one year of free hosting with one of our partners.

Year after year, students create business plans for their university courses. Very few of these plans actually get executed. We are here to put your theory into practice!

We are here to change that.

Participate in our Startup Scholarship competition and receive $1.500 + 1 year of free hosting. All you have to do is to send us the executive summary of your ... Startup Scholarship Competition 2015-04-20T15:26:59.000Z

Who can participate?

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You want to start your own business, preferably an online business
  • Currently enrolled in a university or college course.
  • Your business plan has to be in English (your country of residence can be anywhere)
  • Apply individually or as a group (max. 4 people)

Your business plan can be written specifically for this competition or can already exist – it doesn’t matter! The important thing is that you have the desire to create your own business.

Here’s how it works:

You have until June 30 2015 to submit the executive summary of your business plan.

(The executive summary is a condensed version of the business plan that highlights the most important details on 1-2 pages – more info here). You don’t have to give us every last detail, just enough to be able to judge whether your idea has substance. The most convincing submission wins.

The winner will be announced on July 8, 2015.

Who are we?

At we help beginners to create their own websites. If you’re looking for an easy way to get started, please check out our free eBook “Website Creation for Absolute Beginners”.

To get your feet wet and start creating a website directly, take a look at our website builder comparison chart where we review providers such as Weebly, Shopify and Wix, all very easy to use and very powerful. If you are looking for almost unlimited scalability and don’t mind getting involved with the technical side of website creation, we recommend our WordPress Special. If on the other hand, you don’t have a budget, you can even get started with a free website builder.

The Winner

winnerThe winner will receive $500 directly, the rest ($1,000) will be paid by us for professional services (e.g. your graphic designer can invoice us directly; or we fund your online marketing campaigns.)
We will also pay for one year of web hosting through one of our partners* (up to $300).
*You can use Weebly, Jimdo, Shopify, Wix, Webnode, A Small Orange or Bluehost to create your website.

But that’s not all: Robert Brandl, the founder of WebsiteToolTester will throw in a few mentoring sessions, if required. He has more than 10 years professional experience in online marketing and can help you accelerate your business.

We will not share your submissions with any third parties. If we write about your submission on our blog we will consult you first. You will not give up any equity by participating in this contest.

My business plan isn’t complete yet – can I still participate?

Yes, you only need to submit the (executive) summary or a similar document (like the Business Model Canvas) in order to participate. We don’t need to see a completed business plan but may ask you questions if something is unclear.

Can I participate if my business is not a web-based business?

Yes. The only requirement is that you are going to create a website for your business and that it has relevance as a source of information or for sales and marketing.

How do I find a good business idea?

We highly recommend Dan Norris’ book The 7 Day Startup – You Don’t Learn Until You Launch where he explains how to get your business off the ground quickly. It’s only around $4 and it’s essential reading for new entrepreneurs.

Won’t you guys just steal my idea?

We understand that you may be concerned about this. The thing is though, ideas alone are worthless, it’s the execution that counts. For all entries, what we can do is to promise not to copy and/or share your business ideas with anyone outside of the WebsiteToolTester team. We also won’t publish anything about your business on our website without your consent.

What’s in it for us? We are seeking a great case study of a successful student business, and of course, a bit of publicity.

Can we participate as a team?

Yes, that’s possible but the number of team members cannot be more than four. Also, if you participate on your team’s behalf, please make sure the other team members are fine with that.

Do I qualify if I want to create an iOS or Android app?

Absolutely. As long as you put together a website for your app business. It doesn’t need to be a big one.

Is it ok if my business plan is already five years old?

Sure, as long as your idea is convincing.

I’ve already started working on the business, can I participate?

Yes, but your business may not be older than 6 months.

Why don’t you pay out the entire prize in cash?

We want to avoid people participating in order to get the cash prize; but never actually executing their business.

Please note that we reserve the right to disqualify participants that engage in unlawful or fraudulent behaviour.

Spread the word!

Here is our flyer that you can download (right click > save as) and put on your university’s bulletin board. We appreciate your help!
